The studio is fully equipped to store and treat most textile items - including large three-dimensional objects - is environmentally controlled and fitted with an intruder alarm. The layout of the workspace is designed to be as flexible as possible, with mobile equipment and modular work surfaces.
Equipment Mechanical cleaning is undertaken using a range of vacuum cleaners and a vacuum tweezer unit for low-powered and microscopic work. Softened water is on tap, and a de-ioniser is fitted to supply a purer quality for those treatments which require it. Wet cleaning is normally undertaken in appropriately sized trays, but the downstairs floor is constucted to accommodate purpose built baths for the cleaning of larger items such as tapestries. A vacuum suction table with carbon-filter assembly (for use with solvents) allows treatment to items with highly fugitive dyestuffs, for example very delicate items which will not withstand the rigors of a normal wet treatment, and spot cleaning. |
A sampler being wet cleaned on the suction table A purpose-made tapestry roller frame facilitates the support treatment of tapestries up to 16ft in depth, enabling full or patch supports to be applied. Treatments such as low-oxygen fumigation for insect eradication are offered but undertaken off-site. |
